Horizon › On Rust
Minecraft on Rust, same game.
People call Horizon Minecraft Rust Edition. It is Java 26.3 in the Rust language, not a new sandbox and not Facepunch’s Rust.
Rewriting Minecraft in Rust here means: take Java Edition 26.3 rules and implement them natively. Generation, physics, redstone, mobs, packets, light, meshes, saves. Same inputs, outputs compared by automated tests.
281 differential harnesses feed Horizon and vanilla the same inputs. On 13 October 2026 every listed subsystem passed the harnesses that compare it. 100% means 100% of what the tests compare. Players still find differences. Nightlies fix them.
| Subsystem | What the harnesses compare |
|---|---|
| Game loop and input | Camera, auto-jump, sprint, frame limiter |
| Assets | Item models on 196,290 stacks, resource pack screen |
| Network | Vanilla server join, dedicated server, LAN |
| Chunks and palettes | Same containers on client and saves |
| Meshes and light | Section quads, slabs and stairs relight |
| World generation | 2,352 chunks, 225 structure sites, three dimensions |
| Entities | Spawn, raids, AI, finalizeSpawn |
| Inventory and HUD | Menu clicks, recipe book, 758 commands |
| Blocks and ticks | Redstone, dispensers, crafter, sculk |
What it is not
- Not a mod on the Java client. There is no JVM in the game runtime.
- No hard paid-licence gate — works with any game version on disk.
- Not Bedrock and not the C++ edition.
- Not a place where Fabric or Forge JARs run.
Frame timings: performance. Install: launcher.
